A prompt is the text you type into an AI tool to tell it what you want. The way you write your prompt directly affects the quality of the response you get back. This article covers what prompts are, why they matter, practical tips for writing better ones, and the most common mistakes people make.

What is a prompt?

When you type a question into ChatGPT, Claude, or any other AI assistant, that text is your prompt. It is the input — the instruction, question, or request that tells the AI what to do.

The AI reads your prompt, processes it using the patterns it learned during training (covered in our previous article), and generates a response based on what it predicts would be the most helpful continuation.

A prompt can be as simple as a single question:

What is the capital of France?

Or as detailed as a multi-paragraph instruction:

You are a helpful copy editor. Review the following paragraph for grammar, clarity, and tone. Suggest improvements but keep the original meaning. Use a friendly, professional tone.

Both are prompts. The difference is how much context and guidance you give the AI.

Why does the way you ask matter?

An LLM (large language model — the engine behind most AI text tools) does not read your mind. It works with exactly what you give it. If your prompt is vague, the response will be generic. If your prompt is specific, the response will be more targeted and useful.

Think of it like asking a colleague for help. If you say "Can you help me with this?" they will ask follow-up questions because they do not have enough context. But if you say "Can you proofread this two-paragraph email to a client and check that the tone sounds professional?" they know exactly what to do.

The same principle applies to AI tools. More context and clearer instructions lead to better results.

Five tips for better prompts

1. Be specific about what you want

Vague prompts produce vague answers. Instead of asking for "something about marketing," describe exactly what you need.

Weak: Write something about our product launch.

Better: Write a 200-word announcement email for our team about the launch of Multicorn Shield on February 20th. Keep the tone excited but professional. Include three key features: consent screens, spending controls, and activity logging.

The more detail you include — length, tone, audience, format, key points — the closer the output will be to what you actually need.

2. Give the AI a role

Starting your prompt by telling the AI who it should act as can significantly improve the output. This sets expectations for the tone, depth, and perspective of the response.

Example: You are an experienced Python developer. Review this function and suggest improvements for readability and performance.

Example: You are a patient teacher explaining concepts to a 10-year-old. Explain how the internet works.

This works because the AI adjusts its language, detail level, and assumptions based on the role you assign.

3. Provide examples of what you want

If you have a specific format or style in mind, show the AI an example. This technique is sometimes called "few-shot prompting" — you give the AI a few examples of the pattern you want, and it follows that pattern in its response.

Example prompt:

Convert these notes into a consistent format:

Input: "Met with Sarah. Discussed Q3 budget. She'll send numbers Friday." Output: "Meeting with Sarah — Topic: Q3 budget. Action: Sarah to send numbers by Friday."

Now convert this: "Call with DevOps team. Deployment blocked by cert issue. Jake investigating."

By showing the AI the format once, it knows exactly how to structure the next conversion.

4. Break complex tasks into steps

If you need the AI to do something complicated, break it into smaller pieces. One long, tangled prompt often produces a messy response. A sequence of focused prompts produces better results.

Instead of: "Analyse this data, find trends, create a summary, and suggest three action items" — try asking one thing at a time:

  1. "Here is our Q3 sales data. What are the three most notable trends?"
  2. "Based on those trends, write a two-paragraph summary for our leadership team."
  3. "Suggest three specific action items our sales team could take in Q4."

Each step builds on the last, and you can course-correct between steps if the AI goes in the wrong direction.

5. Tell the AI what to avoid

LLMs try to be helpful, which sometimes means they add information you did not ask for, use overly formal language, or make assumptions. You can prevent this by explicitly stating what you do not want.

Example: Explain how DNS works in three sentences. Do not use technical jargon. Do not include analogies.

Constraints narrow the output and prevent the most common ways AI responses go off track.

Common mistakes

Assuming the AI remembers everything

In most AI tools, the conversation has a limited memory window (called "context"). If your conversation gets very long, the AI may lose track of details you mentioned earlier. If something important gets lost, restate it.

Not reviewing the output

AI-generated text can sound confident and polished even when it contains errors. Always review the output before using it — especially for facts, numbers, names, and dates. Treat AI output as a first draft, not a final product.

Writing prompts that are too short

Single-word or one-sentence prompts rarely produce great results. You do not need to write a novel, but including your goal, audience, format, and any constraints makes a noticeable difference.

Giving up after one try

If the first response is not what you wanted, do not give up on the tool. Refine your prompt. Add more detail, give an example, or tell the AI what was wrong with its first attempt. This back-and-forth — sometimes called "iterating" — is a normal part of working with AI tools.

Asking for the impossible

They do not have access to the internet (unless the tool specifically provides that), they cannot read files on your computer, and they cannot take actions in the real world. A regular AI tool waits for your prompt, generates a response, and stops. An AI agent goes further: it can take a prompt, break it into steps, and then actually carry out those steps — sending emails, searching the web, updating spreadsheets, or making purchases.
